GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS AND SOCIAL CONCERNS

With Kenyan Government lifting Bans on GMOs and okays cultivation and importations of its products , there are cons and pros to the process.

* Genetically modified (GM) foods are foods derived from organisms whose genetic material (DNA) has been modified in a way that does not occur naturally.

PROS & CONS OF GMO

PROS:

* Some benefits of genetic engineering in agriculture are increased crop yields, reduced costs for food or drug production, reduced need for pesticides, enhanced nutrient composition and food quality, resistance to pests and disease, greater food security, and medical benefits to the world's growing population.

CONS

  • * Allergic reaction. Allergic Reactions. 
  • * Production of toxins. Genetically Modified Tomatoes. 
  • * Reduced nutritional value. Reduced Nutrition. 
  • * Release of toxins to soil. Toxins on soil. 
  • * Resistance of pests to toxins. Resistance of pests to toxins. 
  • * Disruption of biodiversity.
